Lincolnshire is home to two of the most celebrated artisan cheeses in Britain, neither of which you'll find made anywhere else. Lincolnshire Poacher is produced exclusively at Ulceby Grange Farm in the Lincolnshire Wolds, where the Jones family has farmed since 1917. Simon Jones began making the cheese in 1992, using unpasteurised milk from his own herd of 280 Holstein Friesians. Each batch matures for up to 18 months, developing a flavour somewhere between a West Country cheddar and a continental Comte. It won Supreme Champion at the British Cheese Awards and has been a favourite of cheesemongers worldwide ever since.
Cote Hill Cheese is equally distinctive. The Davenport family at Osgodby near Market Rasen produce five different handmade cheeses, including the award-winning Cote Hill Blue, all from unpasteurised morning milk taken directly from their own herd of 80 Friesian and Brown Swiss cows. Their cheese shed offers a unique farm-gate experience complete with cheese vending machine.
The county also has a strong ice cream tradition. Dennett's has been making dairy ice cream to their own recipe since 1926, now in its fourth generation. Daisy Made produces farm-fresh ice cream from their own herd near Lincoln.
When your local cheesemaker is under 10 miles away and the supermarket average for dairy is over 350 miles, the quality difference speaks for itself. Browse the dairy and egg producers below.
