JW Lees has been family-run since 1828, now in its seventh generation. Robinsons has brewed in Stockport since 1838. Hydes has been independent since 1863. Joseph Holt has operated a tower brewery in Cheetham Hill since 1849.

Marble Brewery changed the city beer scene when it started brewing organic ales in the Marble Arch pub in 1997. Cloudwater, founded in 2014, was quickly rated among the best breweries in the world. Seven Bro7hers in Salford, Pomona Island, Track Brewing, Brightside in Radcliffe, Runaway in Stockport, and Dunham Massey in a National Trust village all add depth.
