Drinks in Staffordshire

Staffordshire can lay claim to being the most important brewing county in English history. Burton-upon-Trent was once home to over 30 breweries, and at its peak one quarter of all beer sold in Britain was produced in the town. The mineral-rich water from the local gypsum hills gave Burton ales their distinctive character, and the term Burtonisation is still used by brewers worldwide. Burton Bridge Brewery is the last remaining independent brewer in the town, keeping that heritage alive with 20 CAMRA awards.

The modern scene is equally vibrant. Titanic Brewery in Stoke-on-Trent has produced over 20 distinctive beers since 1985, with their Plum Porter becoming one of the most recognised craft ales in the Midlands. Lymestone Brewery in Stone, Peakstones Rock near Alton Towers, and Blythe Brewery in the countryside all add depth. Nelsons Distillery and School in Uttoxeter offers gin-making experiences. Six Towns Distillery draws on Potteries heritage. Buzzards Valley Vineyard produces English wine.
