Find Local Producers in Merseyside

Merseyside has a food and drink scene that reflects the character of a city and region built on trade, culture, and independent spirit. Liverpool Baltic Triangle has become one of the most exciting craft beer neighbourhoods in the North West, with breweries, distilleries, and taprooms clustered in converted warehouses and industrial buildings that once served the docks.

Love Lane Brewery is the centrepiece. A renovated rubber factory on Bridgewater Street was transformed into an 18,000 hectolitre brewery capable of producing 3.2 million pints a year. Under the same roof, the historic Higson brand, founded in 1780 and beloved by generations of Liverpool beer drinkers, has been revived. Ginsmiths of Liverpool operates an artisan distillery in the same building, creating small-batch gins including Merchant Navy gin inspired by the city maritime heritage and an award-winning Marshmallow gin made with real marshmallow root.

Black Lodge Brewing has been shaking up the Baltic Triangle since 2015 with experimentation and collaboration at its core, recently opening a second tap in West Kirby. Neptune Brewery in Maghull produces naturally conditioned, vegan-friendly beers. Carnival Brewing started in a kitchen in 2017 and now operates on the waterfront. Rock The Boat brews in a 16th century wheelwright workshop in Little Crosby Village. Across the Mersey, Brimstage Brewery has been a Wirral favourite since 2006 and Peerless Brewing in Birkenhead has won awards since 2009.

Beyond beer, Merseyside has genuine food depth. Liverpool Cheese Company in Woolton stocks over 200 varieties of artisan cheese from a Grade II listed dairy and runs cheese schools. Church Farm Organics on the Wirral produces free-range turkeys and Gloucester Old Spot products. Bates Dairy has been delivering milk to Southport doorsteps since 1939 using electric milk floats, one of the largest independent dairies in Britain. Tappers Gin in Southport produces award-winning small-batch gins. Wirral Watercress has been growing fresh watercress on the peninsula since 2005.

The average food item on a UK supermarket shelf has travelled over 1,500 miles to reach you. Even in a metropolitan area, there are independent producers within reach who offer fresher food, shorter supply chains, and a direct connection to the people who make what you eat and drink.

Merseyside covers Liverpool, Wirral, Southport, St Helens, and Knowsley. The region relationship with food and drink is deeply connected to its maritime heritage. Liverpool was one of the great trading ports of the world, and the flavours that arrived through its docks influenced the food culture of the entire North West. Today, that outward-looking spirit shows in a food and drink scene that embraces innovation while celebrating independent makers.

The Baltic Triangle deserves special mention. This former industrial district south of the city centre has been transformed into a creative quarter where breweries, distilleries, coffee roasters, and food businesses sit alongside digital and creative enterprises. The clustering of independent producers in the Baltic mirrors what has happened in Stirchley in Birmingham and Bermondsey in London, proof that when independent food and drink businesses support each other, the whole neighbourhood benefits.
