East Riding of Yorkshire stretches from the chalk hills of the Yorkshire Wolds to the Holderness coastline, with the historic market town of Beverley and the city of Hull at its heart. It is a county defined by its agricultural landscape and coastal heritage, with a food and drink scene that quietly delivers some of the best produce in the north of England.
The brewing tradition is rooted in the land. Wold Top Brewery on a family farm near Driffield uses barley grown in the surrounding Wolds fields and chalk-filtered water drawn from beneath the farm. Great Newsome Brewery in the Holderness countryside goes even further, growing their own malting barley and experimenting with homegrown hops since 2007. Old Mill Brewery at Snaith produces traditional ales. Bone Machine in Hull brings craft beer to the city centre. Colemans Cider is made by friends with a passion for proper cider in the Yorkshire Wolds.
The distillery and vineyard scene is growing. Hothams in Hull runs a gin school where customers can blend their own alongside an award-winning range. Mill House Distillery in Cottingham produces Kingtree gin and vodka. Little Wold Vineyard has over 12,000 vines overlooking the Wolds countryside with tours and tastings.
Drewtons Farm Shop on the 1,200-acre Drewton Estate works with over 500 Yorkshire suppliers and features a butcher, deli, cellar, restaurant, and tearoom in beautifully restored farm buildings. Laverack and Son in Holme upon Spalding Moor has been a family butcher for over 150 years. Burgess Ice Cream has been produced the same way since the early 1920s. Side Oven Bakery bakes on a working farm near Driffield. The Bread Shed in Beverley produces loaves from scratch daily. Said Chocolate makes award-winning organic bean-to-bar chocolate in Beverley.
Bridlington Harbour lands more lobster than anywhere else in Europe, earning the town the title of Lobster Capital of Europe. Rafters of Driffield won Best Independent Greengrocer in the UK.
