Find Local Producers in South Yorkshire

South Yorkshire is home to one of the most remarkable urban beer scenes anywhere in the world. Sheffield has been called the Real Ale Capital of the World, with more breweries per head than any other city in the UK, and a devotion to both traditional cask ale and modern craft beer that runs deep through the city culture.

The Kelham Island and Neepsend neighbourhoods form what is known as the Valley of Beer. Kelham Island Brewery was founded in 1990 as the first new independent brewery in Sheffield in nearly a century, and its Pale Rider became one of the most celebrated pale ales in England. When the brewery faced sudden closure in 2022, a passionate group of individuals came together to save it, ensuring its legacy would continue. Abbeydale Brewery, employee-owned since its founding in 1996, produces the legendary Moonshine and runs the experimental Funk Dungeon for wild fermentation and barrel ageing. Bradfield Brewery went from milking 100 cows a day to brewing over 100,000 pints a week on a working Peak District farm. True North Brew Co operates 12 venues across Sheffield and Barnsley with an in-house gin distillery and coffee roastery. Acorn Brewery keeps the classic Barnsley Bitter alive. Triple Point won four World Beer Awards in 2023.

Beyond beer, the county has genuine food depth. Our Cow Molly makes award-winning ice cream from their own Friesian herd in the hills above Sheffield. Longley Farm, founded in 1948, produces cottage cheese and yoghurts from their 250-strong Jersey herd that The Telegraph described as exceptionally good. Barncliffe Brie is Sheffield own artisan soft cheese. Cannon Hall Farm in Barnsley uses traditional methods handed down through generations. Moss Valley Fine Meats rears free-range animals on the border with Derbyshire. Forge Bakehouse produces slow-fermented sourdough using heritage grains.

The average food item on a UK supermarket shelf has travelled over 1,500 miles to reach you. Supermarket cheese averages around 350 miles. Supermarket lamb averages 3,200 miles. A local South Yorkshire producer is typically under 15 miles from your door.

South Yorkshire covers Sheffield, Barnsley, Doncaster, and Rotherham. The landscape ranges from the Peak District fringe in the west (Sheffield is the greenest city in England, with a third of its area lying within the Peak District National Park) to the fertile agricultural flatlands around Doncaster in the east. This diversity supports everything from hill farming and upland dairy to arable cropping and soft fruit growing.

Sheffield relationship with beer stretches back centuries. The city soft water was prized by brewers, and pubs like The Fat Cat, Kelham Island Tavern, and Shakespeare have become destinations for beer lovers from across the country. The annual Sheffield Beer Week celebrates this heritage with events across the city. The wider county, from Barnsley traditional farm shops to Doncaster local suppliers, adds food and farming depth that complements the urban craft scene.
