Gwynedd and Anglesey sit at the heart of North Wales food culture, where mountain, coast, and strait come together to produce some of the most distinctive food in Britain.
Halen Mon is the headline. Founded by Alison and David Lea-Wilson on the banks of the Menai Strait in 1997, this sea salt has become regarded as the finest in the world. It has been served at royal weddings, the London 2012 Olympics, and political summits. Barack Obama is apparently a fan. Heston Blumenthal uses it at The Fat Duck. Gordon Ramsay reaches for it in the kitchen. The salt has held protected food name status since 2014, and the company offers behind-the-scenes tours with guided salt tastings and wild seaweed baths overlooking Snowdonia.
Aber Falls Distillery near Bangor produces award-winning Welsh whisky and gin, named after the nearby waterfall. Purple Moose Brewery in Porthmadog has been producing Cwrw Glaslyn and Snowdonia Ale since 2005. Bragdy Lleu in Dyffryn Nantlle has won five Great Taste awards for their craft beers.
Menai Oysters farms sustainably in the Menai Strait, where the fast-flowing channel between Anglesey and the mainland produces oysters and mussels of exceptional quality. Rhyd y Delyn Farm on Anglesey makes award-winning cheese from their own herd. Snowdonia Cheese Company produces Black Bomber, possibly the most recognisable Welsh cheese in the country.
